WHAT WE’RE WATCHING

NEW DAWN FOR DATA PRIVACY – Happy New Year! Oh, and more importantly, happy belated CCPA Day! The California Consumer Privacy Act officially went into effect yesterday, with full compliance expected by July 1. Zach Warren asked attorneys and technologists for their thoughts on the potential impact of the new law this year and beyond. Spoiler alert: They all agreed it’s kind of a big deal.

BIG LAW AND BIAS  - Unfortunately, 2019 was a big year for exposing Big Law as having a gender bias problem. As the year drew to a close, Dan Packel looked back at the lawsuits that unfolded across the country against a number of large firms. Chief among the litigation targets last year was Jones Day, which was hit with a $200 million putative class action alleging the firm’s “black box” compensation model, leadership structure and culture serve to systematically deny women equal pay and opportunity for advancement. The firm was also accused in a separate lawsuit of discriminating against fathers by providing them eight fewer weeks of parental leave.

COURT REPORT – Ask anyone for the three names that come to mind when they think of New Year’s Eve and you’re sure to get the same response across the board: Dick Clark. Ryan Seacrest. U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. Each year, the chief releases his “State of the Federal Judiciary” report at 6 p.m. Eastern on Dec. 31. This year, Roberts emphasized the important role judges play as guardians of the truth, Mike Scarcella reports. “In our age, when social media can instantly spread rumor and false information on a grand scale, the public’s need to understand our government, and the protections it provides, is ever more vital,” Roberts said.

Rhys Dipshan explains why Australia, France, India, Japan, Mongolia and Singapore are the six countries to watch for big things in legal tech in 2020.
