Big bands, big stars brought holiday music cheer to Asbury Park boardwalk on a big night - Asbury Park Press

There were big bands and big stars on the boardwalk in Asbury Park on Sunday, Dec. 8.

PJ Rasmussen and the Boardwalk Jazz Band played holiday favorites to a packed house at the Langosta Lounge on the boardwalk Sunday night.

Rasmussen is an Ocean Grove native.

“Apparently half the town's population is here tonight,” deadpanned Rasmussen.

The Boardwalk Jazz Band is a big band in every sense of the word with 21 musicians and three vocalists. It was a feat of amazing physical dexterity that the trombonists didn't poke the saxophonists, sitting in front of them, in the back on the Langosta stage.

Maybe they did and nobody complained.

The music played and diners noshed. “What Child is This” started solemn then swung. “Jingle Bells,” the Boardwalk Jazz Band's new single, twinkled with an Andrews Sisters appeal.

Did you miss the show? Their holiday special, “An American Christmas,” airs approximately 12:35 a.m., after Midnight Mass, Wednesday, Dec. 25 on WCBS-TV Channel 2. and 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 25 on WLNY-TV Channel 55.

It's available on other stations across the country, too. Check your local listings for time and channel if you're reading this outside of New Jersey.

Up the boardwalk also on Sunday night, the second annual A Very Asbury Holiday Show  at the Paramount Theatre featured members of the Smithereens, the Patti Smith Band, Vanilla Fudge and more along with stellar local talent.

Desiree Spinks and J.T. Bowen lit up the night on Stevie Wonder's “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours”; the Weeklings sublimely merged  “Revolution” by the Beatles with “Winter Wonderland”; and Layonne Holmes put the night into a funk overdrive on Tower of Power's “What is Hip?”

Pat Roddy, with help of Joey Stann on sax and Tony Perruso on trumpet, sizzled on Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes' “Talk to Me.”

The night was a family affair. Jim Babjak of the Smithereens and his son Tom Babjak played “A Girl Like You” with Anthony Krizan on vocals and Jim took over vocals himself for his composition, “Waking Up on Christmas Morning.”

It's a new Christmas classic.

Joel Krauss of Cats on a Smooth Surface fame sang “ “If I Could Build My Whole World Around You” with his daughter Alexis Krauss.

Alexis is a member of the indie rock band Sleigh Bells.

“This has been a dream of mine since she was a little girl,” Joel said.

They sang another Tammi Terrell and Marvin Gaye classic, “You're All I Need to Get By,” next.

Tony Shanahan of the Patti Smith Band took a break upstairs in the Paramount's lounge about three hours into the four-hour show. He caught up with pal Joe Vadala of the Best of the Eagles. They've known each other since they were kids growing up outside of New Brunswick.

The night was a fundraiser for the Asbury Park Music Foundation and dedicated to the late Kerry Layton of Deal. Friends remember Layton, who passed away in June, as the Ambassador of the Asbury Park music scene for his unwavering support of local music.

His lifelong soulmate, Pam DeLisa, was giving out Kerry Layton pins to friends at the Paramount when she wasn't watching the music.

“I gave out almost one hundred buttons,” DeLisa said. “Kerry really would have enjoyed having this show dedicated to him.”

DeLisa's favorite moment? Lance Larson performing the Joe Cocker version of “With a Little Help from My Friends.”

“Of course Lance took the show away,” DeLisa said. “Lance I always enjoy.”
