Biden, Buttigieg grant big donors access at weekend campaign retreats - POLITICO

Donors to both Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg are flocking to the Midwest this weekend for campaign donor retreats, where they will rub elbows with the candidates’ staffers and receive insider details about the campaigns’ Iowa caucus strategies.

Biden and Buttigieg are the only early-state frontrunners still vying for wealthy donors’ money in the Democratic primary — and the weekend retreats are taking place at a crucial moment for both their campaigns. Both candidates have built large benches of campaign fundraisers they’ll rely on to help raise money through the slew of expensive early-state contests.

Buttigieg’s top donors will gather for a two-day retreat in Chicago. Campaign manager Mike Schmuhl and other senior staffers including Michael Halle, Swati Mylavarapu, Marcus Switzer, Hari Sevugan and Sonal Shah will make presentations on the campaign’s strategy and policy positions, according to a person familiar with the event.

Meanwhile, Biden’s donors will meet in Des Moines, Iowa, over the weekend for strategy sessions and a similar meet-and-greet with senior campaign staff. Some Biden donors headed to Des Moines early to knock on doors in the snow and talk to voters for the former vice president ahead of Biden’s weekend event.

“Buttigieg could go all the way based on the amount of money he’s raised," said Dick Harpootlian, a South Carolina-based Biden fundraiser who is canvassing for the former vice president, recently told POLITICO. Harpootlian said Biden has to "continue to raise money, and I think we’ve got to continue to talk about why he’s the best person to run against Donald Trump."

There is also a new threat looming in the contest for donor support: Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has started courting the support of Democratic donors and industry titans, though he has insisted he will self-fund his campaign. Bloomberg met with technology leaders, including billionaire venture capitalist Ron Conway, on Thursday afternoon at a reception in San Francisco to discuss his run for president, Recode reported.
