Brooks’ big game can’t overcome foul discrepancy, Michigan’s shaky defense vs. Iowa - MLive.com

A COUCH IN ANN ARBOR -- The weather prevented MLive from traveling to Iowa for Friday's game, but it can't stop postgame analysis altogether.

Michigan lost to the Hawkeyes 90-83, falling to 11-6 (2-4).

The Wolverines had a chance late, trailing by just one as the clock approached three minutes, but Iowa's subsequent 7-0 sealed their fate.

It was a familiar result for Michigan, and for the Big Ten this season: Road teams are now 6-37 in the conference. Michigan is 0-5 in true road games.

Foul discrepancy

Juwan Howard had seen enough. After another whistle against his Wolverines, he let the refs have it and was called for his second technical foul of the season.

That was a few minutes into the second half. For the game, Michigan was called for 23 fouls to Iowa’s 13. The Hawkeyes shot 30 free throws -- making 27 -- while Michigan attempted just five.

“It’s very, very frustrating," Howard told reporters about the discrepancy. “I think that was a big reason why I got a tech.”

As a result, the Wolverines were plagued by foul trouble throughout. Zavier Simpson picked up his second foul with 11:10 left in the first half and sat for the remainder of the half. Austin Davis had three fouls in just six minutes. He, Jon Teske, and Franz Wagner had four fouls apiece. Brandon Johns Jr. fouled out.

The Wolverines actually outscored Iowa in the paint, suggesting they were just as aggressive around the basket. But the calls didn’t go their way.

Brooks bounces back

Eli Brooks had been in a major shooting slump. In his three games leading up to Friday, he was 7-of-23 from the field, including just 1-of-14 from 3.

He missed his first shot against Iowa but then caught fire, hitting 3s and shot-faking his way into open jumpers. The junior had 14 of Michigan's first 26 points. He finished with a career-high 25 on 9-of-17 shooting. He never came off the floor.

“I know he’s been getting a lot of media attention, a lot of negative press,” Howard said. “I’m not blaming you guys; just in general. Unfortunately some of it has been disrespectful, I would say, and it’s been unfair. At the end of the day I have to commend him for staying positive, keeping the mental toughness, and trying to find answers.”

Brooks hit the big shot time and again to keep Michigan in the game. That’s potentially critical for Michigan going forward. Another good sign? That Wagner had his fourth straight game in double figures (18 points). He’s made multiple 3-pointers in each game during the recent stretch.

Garza goes off, again

Michigan sent an extra defender at Iowa big man Luka Garza now and then, but it wasn't enough. Garza didn't match the 44 points he hung on the Wolverines in the first matchup, but he was even more efficient. The junior scored 33 on 18 shots.

The reason the final score was different from the first matchup, though, was Garza’s teammates. C.J. Fredrick and Joe Wieskamp combined for 41 points. Ryan Kriener scored 11 points in 10 minutes off the bench in the first half, finishing with 14. The Hawkeyes shot 9-of-16 from 3.

Add it all up, and it was Michigan's worst defensive performance of the season.

Another notch for X

He won’t care, given the game’s result, but Zavier Simpson reached another milestone on Friday. The senior point guard moved into second place in Michigan history in career assists, passing Rumeal Robinson. Simpson now has 579 assists, trailing only Gary Grant (731).
